MDF Dust Briquetting: Turning Waste into Value at W. Howard

Howard produces and distributes Europe’s widest range of MDF profiles, real wood veneer, and foil wrapped products. The company manufactures primed MDF mouldings such as skirting boards, architraves, doorframes, window boards, panelling and other MDF products.

As part of the manufacturing process, large volumes of MDF are sawn, moulded, and sanded, resulting in significant amounts of MDF dust, approximately 40 tons per week.

The Challenge of MDF Dust in Manufacturing

Handling MDF dust is a common challenge in the industry. Prior to installing the C.F. Nielsen BP4000 briquetting press, part of the dust was reused internally, while the rest had to be transported off-site.
The large volumes of MDF dust exceeded the internal heat demand at W. Howard, resulting in high costs and operational complexity.

In addition, a production cap limited how much MDF dust could be generated each week, restricting output and preventing further growth.

Therefore, W. Howard began exploring how to overcome these challenges while also improving long-term sustainability. This included looking into circular economy solutions and more efficient ways to manage MDF dust waste.

The Challenges:

  • Excess MDF dust exceeding internal heat demand
  • High costs of landfill and waste handling
  • Production cap on MDF output
  • Storage of loose MDF dust being impractical and unsafe

MDF Dust Briquetting as a Sustainable Solution

To overcome these challenges, W. Howard implemented an MDF dust briquetting solution from C.F. Nielsen.

MDF dust briquetting works by compressing fine MDF residues into dense, high-quality briquettes. With the installation of the BP4000 mechanical briquetting press, W. Howard can now transform waste into a valuable and reusable energy source.

The briquetting press is fully integrated into the production setup, enabling direct and continuous handling of MDF dust from the manufacturing process.

The solution:

  • Converts MDF dust into stable, high-value fuel briquettes
  • Enables the sale of briquettes to nearby companies as renewable fuel
  • Generates revenue while improving sustainability and workplace safety

From MDF Dust to Revenue: The Results

Implementing the BP4000 MDF dust briquetting solution delivered immediate operational and financial benefits.

Most importantly, W. Howard is now turning their MDF dust into a revenue stream.

MDF dust is now converted into briquettes that can be reused or sold, a clear waste-to-value transformation.

The previous production cap has been lifted, allowing increased capacity and supporting further revenue growth.

At the same time, streamlined handling of MDF dust within the factory has improved overall efficiency in the production process.

In addition to these operational benefits, the mechanical briquetting press has strengthened W. Howard’s sustainability profile by supporting circular economy practices within the wood manufacturing industry.
